Mission Istanbul Review
Sometimes, one goes into a movie screening with absolutely no expectations and finds oneself pleasantly surprised to discover that it wasn't as bad as it could have been. In the case of Mission Istanbul even my low expectations remain unmet.
Let's recap. Zayed Khan plays Vikas Sagar, a leading Indian television journalist, who has just accepted a three-month familiarization assignment with Al-Johara (way to make the association without actually taking the name guys), a controversial news channel that wants to set up shop in India. His divorce goes through with Anjali (Shriya Saran) just in time for him to take up his new job without attachments or obligations. The official press release refers to a painful divorce but that pain is never really in evidence on screen.
In Istanbul, he is driven to the office of Ghazni (Nikitan Dheer), the man who runs Al-Johara, by Owais Husain (Suniel Shetty), a warrior-turned-war correspondent so that they can exchange CVs and the audience may see how cool these big screen journalists are.
Interestingly, the network boss takes his first meeting with Sagar in a tuxedo and then changes clothes for the nightclub scene that follows immediately after. I understand there was a clothing sponsor on this film but really, was that necessary? At the nightclub, Sagar also meets Liza Lobo (Shweta Bhardwaj), a femme fatale whose face twitches when it shouldn't and remains expressionless during dramatic sequences.
Needless to say, things happen. People are killed and Rizwan Khan (Vivek Oberoi), a Turkish 'commando,' pops up into Sagar's life to inform him that his life is in danger. Khan also tells him that he needs to access the thirteenth floor of the Al-Johara building to know the truth about Ghazni's 'Wall of Martyrs' and his organisation. And that's all the 'plot' I feel like sharing for the purpose of this review.
If memory serves, this is the movie that was offered to director Apoorva Lakhia, with the accompanying fat pay cheque, after the success of Shootout At Lokhandwala. It was not money well spent. In every single way that the director could make a bad choice in a sequence -- be it action or dramatic or (heaven help us) comedic -- Lakhia makes it in Mission.
Uncomfortably unfunny sequences linger on for seeming eternities while chase and action sequences are cut together so haphazardly that future generations of film students could write several inconclusive theses about why anyone would keep backing their escape vehicle into a van they've already got past instead of continuing on said escape.
Both the male leads don't seem to understand what it takes to get audiences to suspend disbelief while watching a thriller. Oberoi opts for a knowing smirk while Khan looks like he's barely able to control his steroid rage. No opportunity to overact is missed by either of them.
The antagonists Shabir Ahluwalia and Nikitin Dheer are no better. Aforementioned wardrobe choices notwithstanding, there is little else to write home about either of their performances. And the ladies? Shriya Saran constantly looks like she's straining to remember her lines (or she's smelt something unpleasant) while Shweta Bhardwaj's simpering appears better suited for ads in the back pages of certain lad magazines than it does for the big screen.
Sequences, set pieces and plot devices are liberally sourced from such Hollywood fare as Enemy Of The State, The Siege, The Matrix, Swordfish and the Hong Kong actioner Infernal Affairs. The rest apparently came from the fertile imaginations of the director and writer Suresh Nair. One of which would be the blatant product and tagline placement for a fizzy drink done so horribly badly that I, for one, am never going to be able to pick up a can of the stuff again.
The film could have made interesting points about the economics of terror, the commoditisation of news and its sensationalised packaging as entertainment. It also alludes to various vested Western interests in keeping the region in conflict but takes that thread nowhere. In the final analysis, all the hints and allegations and things left unsaid cannot distract from the fact that as a piece of entertainment, or education, this mission is a failure.
In the US, the major movie studios sometimes adopt a practice of not screening for the press, certain movies that they are certain will garner bad reviews. Most often, this practice is adopted for genre films, specifically horror, which have built-in audiences and are therefore considered critic-proof. Tellingly, Mission Istanbul was not screened for the press. In that way at least, the filmmakers seem to have managed to become international.

Barack Obama was none too happy about a New Yorker Magazine cover that depicted he and wife Michelle as two ragtag terrorist types. Now Vanity Fair is taking aim at that cover by doing their own cover of John McCain.
The magazine takes aim at McCain's age and wife Cindy's battle with prescription drugs. Although not quite as meaty as the Obama slams, they have to work with the material at hand.
"We here at Vanity Fair maintain a kind of affectionate rivalry with our downstairs neighbors at The New Yorker," says Vanity Fair's website. "We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear... in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Conde Nast building, we'd like to share it with you."

Mumbai, July 20: Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan allegedly came very close to fighting physically last week. The two leading actors of the Indian film industry not only abused each other in the eyes of the whole select gathering during the birthday party of Katrina Kaif, but were just short of throwing punches at each other.
Salman Khan who had thrown the lavish party for his heartthrob Katrina Kaif, the reigning diva of the Indian filmdom was an inebriated state when Shah Rukh Khan entered the party with his wife Gauri Khan. Salman Khan had reportedly a few complaints from Shah Rukh Khan.
The most important complaint being the fact that the king Khan had not reciprocated his generosity by appearing in a guest role in his forthcoming film.
Salaman Khan had appeared in a guest role in Shah Rukh starrer Om Shanti Om, that went on to become a super duper hit. But apparently Shah Rukh Khan failed to reciprocate by doing a guest appearance.
Salman and Shah Rukh Khan have also become competitors recently. Both the superstars are hosting game show for different TV channels. Salman allegedly said that SRK wanted to torpedo his game show ‘Dus Ka Dum’.
King Khan initially avoided responded to his vitriolic, but thing went out of hand when Sallu threatened to beat him. This infuriated Shah Rukh so much that he said that he would beat Salman, there before theeyes of his friends and relatives.
Luckily Gauri intervened before it was too late and said she was leaving. She took Shah Rukh’s hand and led him outside.
Salman has a very troubled and infamous past. His turbulent relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai was a well publicised topic in the Indian media, and had constantly filled gossip columns. After their break-up in March 2002, Rai accused him of harassing her. She claimed that Khan had not been able to come to terms with their break-up and was hounding her; her parents lodged a complaint against him.
Salman was arrested in 2002 for rash and negligent driving. His car had collided into a bakery in Mumbai killing a person and injuring three others.
In the year 2006 Sallu was acused of blackbuck hunting and was sentenced 1 year in prison. He spent several days in jail later.

Pierce Brosnan is 'outrageously' kissable!
Washington, July 18 : Legendry actor Pierce Brosnan may not be attached to the 'James Bond' film series anymore, but he is still considered to be one of the most kissable men in Hollywood.
Mamma Mia's director Phyllida Lloyd describes Brosnan as man with "total smooch factor".
"He's incredibly smoochy, there isn't a 15-year-old or an 85-year-old who doesn't love Pierce," People magazine quoted producer Judy Craymer, as saying.
The actor's wife Keely Shaye also praised husband, saying: "He has "outrageous" kissability, If they only knew!"
Amanda Seyfried, 23, was one actress who said that she would not kiss Brosnan.
"He has extreme 'smooch factor'. But I wouldn't kiss him because he's married!" she said.

Kismat Konnection Review
Film: Kismat Konnection; Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Juhi Chawla, Vishal Malhotra; Director: Aziz Mirza;
Kismat Konnection is one of the most awaited films this season and there is lots of hype surrounding it. However, it happens quite frequently that many hyped movies turn out to be big disappointments such as Tashan, Love Story 2050, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic,etc. Fortunately, this is not the case with Kismat Konnection. It`s not just all hype and no substance but a movie with a soul that will immediately connect with the audience.
The basic plot of the movie revolves around Raj Malhotra (Shahid Kapoor) (doesn`t the name sound too SRKish?…but the film is not as cliched as the name sounds, thankfullysmiling smiley, an architect, who was touted as the next BIG thing during his college days…be it academics,sports,dramatics…he was an all-rounder and his friends had made a TIME magazine cover with Raj`s face on it. Despite his potential and abilities, Raj failed to make it big in life and after 5 years of his graduation he is still not able to achieve success in his life because luck never supported him. Something or the other always goes wrong with him…when he has to wake up at the morning, his alarm clock doesn`t ring, when he is about to be appointed as an architect, the boss of the contracting company dies and so on. Raj tries his luck once again to be appointed for a shopping mall construction project by Mr.Gill (Om Puri) but luck once again betrays him when an old school friend (Manoj Joshi) of his attempts to take away the contract from Raj`s hands and secure it for himself. A disappointed Raj one night sees an advertisment on the television which claims to provide the solution to everyone`s problems in life. The advertisment states that anyone who contacts Haseena Bano Jaan (Juhi Chawla) will be freed from all his worries forever. So, Raj obviously notes down her address and drops in at her premises. Haseena Bano Jaan states that there is a force that is his lucky charm and would remove all his problems but he has to recognize that ’force’. Raj meets Priya (Vidya Balan) several times…once when his car is about to collide with hers…or at the ATM card machine spot or at a bar. Each time he meets her, things turn out to be in his favour and miracles take place with him. He manages to secure a construction contract and also manages to impress Mr.Gill, when it seems impossible to him. It is then when he realizes that Priya is that force that is his lucky charm. However, there are two problems; Priya runs an old citizens hospital and Gill`s shopping mall is constructed at the same place as the hospital and secondly, Priya is about to get married within a few days and Raj won`t have his lucky charm for very long, with him. Plus, Raj also realises by then that he is in love with Priya.
The soundtrack composed by Pritam is another strong point. My favourite songs from the movie are Aai Paapi, Bakhuda Tum Hi Ho, Sohni and Move Your Body (which appears during the end credits). Other than that, the camerawork of the movie si fantastic. Most of the movie has been shot in Canada and it has been shot so beautifully that I felt like going on a vacation there smiling smiley The film carries a very stylish look but thank God that the story didn`t suffer due to this style…the impact of the movie only enhanced with it.
Performances are also top-notch. Shahid Kapoor, even though looks quite young (he can`t help it smiling smiley has undoubtedly matured as an actor and is a complete natural. Vidya Balan is the best thing that has happened to Bollywood since last three years. She is one of the most talented actresses today. Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, etc. maybe some of the top actresses today but not any of them is half as talented as Vidya, when it comes to acting. Vidya almost instantly clicks with the audience and the ease with which she performs makes it a treat to watch her act. She also looks amazingly gorgeous, throughout.
Vishal Malhotra who played Shahid`s best friend in Ishq Vishk is back with Shahid once again and does a fantastic job, complementing Shahid throughout and gives a spontaneous performance. Juhi Chawla does something quite different in the role of a numerologist (a la Sunita Menon) and manages to entertain in her special appearance.The surprise factor of the movie is Himani Shivpuri as Om Puri`s wife. For the first time, she does not irritate but actually makes you laugh, thanks to her perfect comic timing, this time around. You will just love her (loved her dialogue, ’’first,reduce your tone”). Om Puri, Boman Irani and others also do a fine job.
On the whole, Kismat Konnection is a complete family entertainer which is sure to lure everyone`s hearts and do well at the box-office too. You should definitely give this one a watch.
BTW, I was just thinking, while watching the movie that how come everyone in Canada speaks Hindi?
The movie is very simple without any ’mirch-masala’ or item number…yet this very simplicity is the reason which manages to hold the viewers` interest because it makes the film look more believable and realistic. There is a lot of humour in the film but thank God that director Aziz Mirza`s sense of humour is very subtle, not loud and cheap, which works big time because the audience of today has matured and Johnny Lever or even Rajpal Yadav type comedy is out of fashion, now. The movie has a lot of entertaining moments, the best ones being; when Raj and his friend (played by Vishal Malhotra) get to know that the boss of the company with whom they had contracted has died, when both the friends go to Gill`s office for the first time, when Shahid and Vidya meet for the first time in a road accident, Juhi Chawla`s introduction scene, all the light moments between Shahid and Vidya, when Vidya finds out the reality of her fiance` and the climax of the movie, especially with the twist in the story brought about by Boman Irani.

Project Runway Season 5
Bravo has kept us in a state of painful suspense regarding the Season 5 roster for Project Runway, much like Mom and Dad hiding presents until Christmas afternoon. The show has been under a good deal of scrutiny of late, with all of its diehard fans wondering what will happen when the show moves to the not-as-fab Lifetime network for the next season. And why, we ask, the lack of promotion? I didn't even know Season 5's start date until last month. Come on, people, we had viewing parties to set up, and contestants to scour the blogosphere for -- let's get the party started already!
Whatever the reason for keeping the show under a (fabulous fur) wrap, Season 5 kicks off tonight, so after the jump, let's pick apart the hot trannie messes from the ferocia couturas, shall we, PopWatchers?
Blayne - Seattle's "Most Stylish Male" disappoints me by wearing the same American Apparel sweatshirt I use to ward off the office's subzero AC. But his experience with athletic apparel and apparent love of neon might produce some surprisingly fabulous spandex creations.
Daniel - This Massachusetts mama's boy has the sexually ambiguous good looks of Daniel Vosovic and not enough of the Season 2 finalist's initial style. Supposedly there's a wild side to this scruffy guy, but we'll wait until he reinvents animal prints to get our hopes up.
Emily - Project Runway is never without its share of edgy hipster ladies. The leather legwarmer-rocking Emily comes equipped with that business savvy edge that will hopefully help, and not hurt, her.
Jennifer - Not only is this contestant from my hometown, an alum of my high school, and a super classy, mega-talented, extremely brilliant young designer, but is my "familiar face" -- my cousin's best friend! I remember cooing over the dresses they made for a high-school dance, and now Heidi Klum will be the judge! All impartiality aside, congratulations and good luck to Jen!! (And for anyone in the greater Syracuse area, my grandma is throwing a viewing party tonight at her apartment.)
Jerell - This tall Texan might have what it takes to reach the finals: he was a former model so knows the biz from different angles and has experience making something out of nothing -- a skill that could come in handy when creating outfits out of trash...
Jerry - With a clothing line already under his belt, Jerry might be that all-too-confident self-made man who blows it by being a little too cocky. I do smell a "green" eco-something challenge coming though, so his use of natural fabrics might come in handy.
Joe - This father of two might not be able to roll with the rest of the Project Runway contestants in their Atlas IKEA-furnished apartments, but it'll definitely be fun watching this season's straight-guy-with-interesting-facial-hair try.

Korto - Korto was born and raised in Liberia, trained in Canada, and now lives outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. Her use of African prints and tribal details will no doubt bring a fresh perspective to this season.
Leanne - With her own line of clothing called "Leanimal," this Portland native might be more wild than her simple exterior lets on. Early inspirations from designing ballet costumes might be handy if Sasha Cohen decides to skate through again.
Stella - Stella's a pro with denim and leather, but let's hope her work with tulle and silk won't send Austin Scarlett to an early grave.
Suede - Not only is Suede Season 5's "this is obviously not my real name" designer, but he also looks like he's the "I'm not here to make friends" guy. But his mention of Madonna got me hoping that it might be time for the material girl to stop in as a guest judge!
Terri - I don't know if furry pants paired with graphic tees are, were, or will ever be in style, but varied experience, an extensive resume, and a seemingly free, fun spirit might keep the Chicago girl around to change our minds.
Wesley - Behind the faux-hawk, you can hear the wheels turning as the show's youngest contestant (age 23) tries to think of what word can be this season's "fierce." This former Marc Jacob intern has really "big old sunglasses" to fill if he's looking to be the new Project Runway wunderkind.
After a peek at Project Runway's new lot of hopeful designers, who do you think will make it to Fashion Week? Was it worth the agonizing wait? Sixteen new fashion designer wannabes are about to come face to face with Victoria's Secret angel host Heidi Klum and mentor Tim Gunn for new challenges. Judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors will also be back.
The network also promised a lineup of notable guest judges, including Natalie Portman, LL Cool J, Brooke Shields, stylist Rachel Zoe, RuPaul and Sandra Bernhard. Big names in the fashion industry, Diane von Furstenberg and Cynthia Rowley, are also set to guest judge.

'High School Musical 3' trailer debuts
A trailer for the big-screen sequel to the two U.S. "High School Musical" television movies debuted Monday on television.
Starring Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman, "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" is scheduled to open Oct. 24.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures U.K. said it released the first images from the film at http://www.image.net to tie in with the launch of the new trailer, which premiered Monday on the Disney Channel.
The trailer includes the new song "Now or Never," which is to be the first single released off the soundtrack.

Miss Venezuela wins Miss Universe 2008
Miss Venezuela Dayana Mendoza was crowned Miss Universe 2008 at the Crown Convention Center in Nha Trang, Vietnam, Monday.
The 22-year-old Miss Venezuela edged a fellow Latina, Miss Colombia Taliana Vargas, who won 1st runner-up.
The second, third and fourth runners-up were Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Russia and Miss Mexico, respectively.
"Actually, God made men and women different. But the big difference between women and men--it doesn't matter what kind of life they live--is that men think that the faster way to go to a point is to go straight. Women, no. The faster way to go to a point is to go through curves and fixing every curve," Miss Venezuela answered international judge Louis Lacari.
Before the special announcement, Miss Venezuela, who is into interior design and learning new languages, was among the crowd favorites.
She wore a beautiful yellow night gown when given the 18K white and yellow gold crown, which was valued at $120,000. She is the 57th Miss Universe.
The crown was given to her by Miss Universe 2007 Riyo Mori of Japan.
Earlier, the Miss Congeniality category was awarded to Rebeca Moreno of El Salvador and the Best National Costume award was handed to Miss Thailand Gavintra Photijak.

Stage set for Miss-Kerala 2008
KOCHI: Beauty and brains will be put to test on July 11 in Kochi, where the next Malayali beauty queen will be crowned.
The logo of the event ‘Vivel Miss Kerala 2008’, the beauty pageant, was officially unveiled here.
Speaking on the occasion, pageant director Ram Menon said,”We are expecting the participation of a large number of girls. Students with various educational backgrounds were part of the contest in the previous years.
This year, we will reward the winners with educational scholarships.”
Miss Kerala 2007 Rohini Mariam Idikkula was present at the event. Rohini, a law student, recalled her ‘crowning moment’ and explained how her life had changed after that.
“Besides glamour and fame, the pageant is a wonderful platform for youngsters to showcase their talent,” she said.
Harish Babu, managing director of Impresario Event Management India Ltd, and Satyanath, Kerala head ITC, were present at the press meet.
The regional auditions will be held in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and New Delhi. Entries will be accepted from June 10 to 25.
Girls of Malayali origin between 16 and 24 years and a minimum height of 5’2” can participate in the contest.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Weeks after giving birth to daughter Maddie Briann, Jamie Lynn Spears is showing off the newborn, sharing memories of a "perfect" delivery and longing to be a Southern soccer mom.
Jamie Lynn Spears gave birth to Maddie Briann on June 19.
Spears and fiance Casey Aldridge welcomed Maddie at a hospital in McComb, Mississippi, on June 19. The younger sister of Britney Spears poses with her on the cover of OK! magazine -- as expected, given the fact that Spears announced her pregnancy through an article in OK! and reportedly was to receive a large payday for exclusive pictures of the baby.
The photos were taken at the pair's Louisiana home. The magazine does not comment on the terms of its deals with celebrities.
In an interview with OK!, the 17-year-old Jamie Lynn said she had been nervous about giving birth "but it all fell into place. I was right on schedule. I had a perfect pregnancy and a perfect delivery. I was very blessed."
Jamie Lynn said watching Aldridge, a pipe-layer from Liberty, Mississippi, hold Maddie for the first time "was the coolest thing. ... He was so happy, and that made me the happiest person alive."
Jamie Lynn's immediate family -- including big sister Britney -- where there for the birth, though Aldridge was the only one allowed in the delivery room.
"It was such a big day," she said. "And being able to have your sister there, your whole family there, meant a lot. Everybody flew in to celebrate."
Lynne Spears, already grandmother to Britney's young sons, told the magazine: "You never remember how little they are, and then you hold them. I purred like a kitten, and I remember saying, 'Jamie Lynn, she's so beautiful."'
Jamie Lynn thinks Maddie takes after daddy.
"As much as I'd like her to look like me -- I just carried her for nine months -- she looks like Casey! He reminds me of it every day," she said.
Jamie Lynn said Maddie sleeps in a bassinet by the couple's bed because she's "not ready to put her (in the nursery) all the way across the house."
She said Lynne Spears is a hands-on grandma.
"Mama has been here a bunch," she said. "She wants to see the baby all the time. She told me the doctors are always going to be real strict and tell you, 'Don't do this and don't do that.' Just follow your instincts. You're the mother and you know what your baby needs. That's what I've done and it seems to have worked."
Jamie Lynn, who recently starred on the Nickelodeon sitcom "Zoey 101," said she plans to raise Maddie down South where "the focus is family."
"I would love being the soccer mom," she said. "They don't have soccer down here, but I would love being the softball mom driving the kids around."

All the chefs returned to Hell's Kitchen to work for Team Christina and Team Petrozza — and somewhere, a loony bin was missing some patients.
Jenn came back with even more attitude than before, scorned for not being among the final two, while mentally unstable Matt was back to hinder any kitchen productivity with his goon-like insanity.
However, after serious Monkfish issues, Matt managed to pull it together long enough for his team leader Christina Machamer to win Hell's Kitchen.
Christina, a 25-year-old culinary student from St. Louis, MO, and Louis Petrozza, a 47-year-old catering director from Charlotte, NC, were the last and best two candidates standing in the battle for a job as the executive sous chef at Chef Gordon Ramsay's newest restaurant in Los Angeles at The London West Hollywood with a fat $250K salary.

ABC Family’s The Secret Life Of The American Teenager is the network’s latest dramatic series from Brenda Hampton, Creator of 7th Heaven. The series takes a look at the story of one American teenager, and Amy, played by Shailene Woodly, and her unexpected pregnancy. Shailene began acting at the age of 5 and has been working steadily ever since. She is best known for her role as Misha Barton’s younger sister on The OC, and for the lead in the popular WB movie, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure. She has also had recurring role on Crossing Jordan, and Jack and Bobby and numerous guest appearances on other shows such as Cold Case, My Name is Earl, and CSI NY, and had a lead opposite Anne Margaret and Matthew Settle in the TV movie, Close to Home.
Shailene recently spoke to MediaBlvd about why this drama is different than the other teen dramas on TV, and about the journey that her character will undergo as the secret of her pregnancy becomes known.
MediaBlvd Magazine> I know we’ve all seen the press releases, and everybody’s seen the first episode, but can you tell us in your own words what the series is about and what it’s going to explore throughout the season and then a little bit about the character of Amy, who we got introduced to this week?
Shailene Woodley> The show kind of explores teenagers and decisions they make in high school, you know, like when to have sex decisions. And the awesome thing about our show is it doesn’t really refer to drugs or alcohol, which is very rare in TV these days. So I think it’s definitely important for the public to know what teenagers do and talk about at high school and for parents to know what their teens are doing, because often they’re completely clueless. My character, Amy Juergens, she is a go-getter, she’s excited for life, she wants to go to Julliard, she has all these amazing goals. And then she finds out she’s pregnant, and her world kind of comes crashing down and her sense of optimism turns to pessimism. And she freaks out, because all she’s ever known has been completely turned upside down. And she has no one to go to to talk to about her pregnancy. So it’s definitely a hard time in her life.
MediaBlvd> How long is it going to be before the secret gets out and her family learns about the pregnancy? Is that going to happen fairly early in the season or is that going to go for a while with only Amy and her friends knowing about it?
Shailene> Amy tells her friends pretty quickly, obviously, and the rest of her family, they progressively find out.
MediaBlvd> How would you say this show is different from other teenage dramas that are out there that have been on TV in the years past?
Shailene> I think my show is different because, like I said earlier, a lot of the teenage dramas that have been on or are on now all deal with drugs and alcohol and teenagers adding negative things to the world. The nice thing about our show, which I think is definitely—Brenda Hampton is amazing, it’s part of her complete talent—is our show deals with sex probably 30 or 40 times in the pilot, but it’s all about the confusion about sex and the questions teenagers have and trying to figure out who they are through sex or the consequences of it, like Amy Juergens. I think it’s definitely really amazing that we focus on the positive things on teenagers, because the public right now they kind of have a negative outlook on teens and myself being a teenager, I want to change that and be able to show that we have just as much power to change this world as anyone does. So I think it’s really cool what Brenda has created.
MediaBlvd> Did you know who Brenda was and what she had done before you took this role, or at what point did you find out?
Shailene> I did. I knew her from Seventh Heaven. I thought Seventh Heaven was an amazing show, and I had no idea what other shows she has done. Her range of vocabulary and talent - she’s definitely the kind of lady that I aspire to be one day.
MediaBlvd> Back in 1988, Molly Ringwald did the movie, For Keeps, where she played a pregnant teen. Have you talked to her at all about that dynamic and how teen pregnancy is still an issue?
Shailene> We have talked about it, and it’s funny because I didn’t know she had done that movie until she had told me, and we kind of laughed about it and how ironic it was that she was now playing the mom of a pregnant teen. Then we talked about the issue of how it had happened back in the day and now how the issue is being brought back up again, and we kind of both decided that it’s not more of an issue now because there was, we think, just as many teens back then that were getting pregnant, it’s just more socially accepted now. Not that it’s expected; it’s just not as looked down upon quite as much as it was back then. So, we think that by bringing it up again we’re able to stir up different emotions and different feelings and different controversies and be able to put it in terms that are understandable for everybody.
MediaBlvd> How different is it playing this part where you see yourself on the posters, you’re the lead in this role compared to—well I guess you were the lead in Felicity but that was really a one shot thing, this is a series that you’re on posters for everywhere. Is that a cool thing, or how does that make you feel?
Shailene> I’ve been acting for almost 13 years, and it’s just been my hobby. My friends went to soccer practice; I went to auditions. So I’ve never really thought of it as a job or something that my life could be created after. It’s just been something that I have an immense passion for. Seeing my poster up everywhere is so unreal, and it’s almost like a false reality. I can’t really decipher that that’s actually me. I’m at the mall with my friends, or whatever, and we all kind of laugh at it because we don’t know how to react. It’s always been something that I look at as my hobby, not for fame or anything other than the fact that I love it. So it’s definitely an unreal experience, and it’s weird getting used to.
MediaBlvd> So in the poster, you’re obviously wearing, I don’t know if you’d call it a body suit or a prosthetic that makes you look pregnant. Is it something that you have to wear around, and is it heavy?
Shailene> Actually, right now in the early stages of the pregnancy and in the poster I was using a stuffed belly. So it’s not prosthetics or anything, and it’s lighter than a pillow. So it’s kind of fun just to wear around and walk around set. People come around and poke your belly, or whatever, just because it’s weird to see a tall, skinny, gangly, 16-year-old wearing a pregnancy belly.
MediaBlvd> How did you decide you wanted to go into? You’ve been doing it since you were five, I think you said?
Shailene> Yes. It was kind of an accident, actually. I’m not even entirely sure how it happened. My cousin used to be a model and one day brought a talent-call audition thing with her and my mom was like, “Hey, you want to act today?” and I was like, “Sure!” And it just kind of happened. I was never forced to do it, and I never forced them to take me to auditions. It was just kind of one of those things that worked for everybody.
MediaBlvd> The press release for the show says that ABC Family is going to be working with the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, and I was wondering if you’re going to be a part of that at all or if you’re doing anything to support that effort?
Shailene> So far I’ve done a PSA saying how teen pregnancy is preventable and how parents and teenagers can handle it. Other than that we haven’t done anything so far. But I definitely hope to be a part of it, because I want to express my feelings on teen pregnancy and how girls can be helped and how they can realize that they’re not alone in this situation.
MediaBlvd> Great. Did you do anything special to watch the premiere this week? Did you get friends together and did you have a party or anything?
Shailene> My family and I went to my agent’s house and we all hung out with my agent and managers and just had a blast. So, that’s what we did.
MediaBlvd> Do you eventually want to go to college?
Shailene> I do.
MediaBlvd> What do you want to study?
Shailene> I’ve gone to public school my whole life, and three months ago before the show I was planning to apply to NYU in a couple of months. So it’s crazy how life changes so quickly. I do want to go to college. I want to live in New York at some point in my life. I want to go to NYU, and I want to study psych and interior design. They’re completely opposite, but I’m creative and I love the arts, so that’s why I like interior design; and I think psychology is just so fascinating to be able to study the human mind and the human characteristics and the way that we work. So I think that’s definitely up my alley. I want to have options.
MediaBlvd> Do you think you’ll eventually get out of acting, or will you use that? I guess those are two things you can kind of pull into an acting career, too.
Shailene> Yes. I’m the kind of person who likes to try everything in the world, and I will always act just because it’s really the one thing I can express myself fully in and let go of all prerequisites and just be myself in that character, whatever that character may be. So I’ll always act just because it’s my passion, but I want to do other things on the side, too. So we’ll see where the path takes me, and I’ll follow and do what I want to do at the time.
MediaBlvd> What do you like to do in your free time, or do you have any free time?
Shailene> Lately free time has been hard to find, but I love to sew. I love to make bags or shirts or dresses or whatever. So I do a lot of sewing, and my best friend and I actually—she’s an amazing photographer; she wants to be a fashion photographer when she’s older—so we’ll go to the mountains or whatever and we’ll take pictures and I’ll pose for her so she can get a portfolio together. We’re just very creative. We like to go around and make things out of random scraps of anything. I’m definitely an environmentalist. I think that nature is very important, and I dedicate a lot of my time studying awareness about recycling and the effects of bamboo and how it can be incredible over wood and a lot of random things. But I think the environment is something people need to start paying attention to. And it has. People have started to pay more attention to it, so that makes me very, very proud.
MediaBlvd> That actually kind of leads into what I was going to ask you next. With a show like this, especially with you as the lead, you’re kind of developing a voice. You’re going to have the ability to focus attention on different charities or different activities just by talking about things. Are there any specific groups that you’re involved with or that you support currently or that you’re going to support?
Shailene> Currently I support the Ronald McDonald Organization and the National Elizabeth Glaser AIDS foundation. I’ve been doing a lot of research, and I haven’t really found an organization that I have connected to completely, and I want to do something—I want to start an organization that allows families who are unable to go on vacation, I want to provide them with money through an organization to be able to let them go on vacation. I’ve been fortunate enough my entire life to go on one vacation a year, whether it be to Mexico or on a cruise or something, and a lot of my friends never had that opportunity. I think it’s important for kids to be able to have that one time a year where they can get out of the jungle of life and be themselves. So I want to start an organization for that, and I want to be a part of the—I don’t know if I want to join Green Peace or something that has to do with nature, but I haven’t figured out what I want to join yet.
MediaBlvd> Who should be watching this show and why?
Shailene> I haven’t really figured out a minimum age, because it all depends on the maturity level of the young individual, but definitely it should focus on teenagers, and I think parents should watch it, too, because there’s a whole other side to the show that I don’t think people realize right off. That is that parents can learn so much, because Adrian’s mom on the show, she has no idea what her daughter is doing half the time, so I think it’s important for parents to be able to realize that when they leave for a week their teens aren’t necessarily studying for algebra, they’re doing something else. So I think it’s important to open parents’ eyes all around America.

Big Brother 10 cast revealed
Hamster watchers ready? The Big Brother 10 houseguests are now in the house and the official website is up and running. Of course, the show itself won't start until Sunday, but the hype is on now.
Executive producer Allison Grodner has promised us more diversity in casting and actual strangers in the house this season. Did she deliver? Check out the houseguests in the photo gallery and read on past the jump for more.
Okay, Allison Grodner's idea of diversity in casting differs from my own. We're still looking at an overwhelmingly young white group of houseguests. We have a 75 year-old man and a 53 year year-old woman. There are three houseguests in their thirties ... two are 30 and 31, mind you. The rest are all in their twenties. There are two black houseguests, one Korean-American, and no one else is striking me as any sort of diverse ethnic or cultural background other than plain old Caucasian raised in the USA. Diversity in casting? I think not. I can only hope they have minds. (But then what would they be doing on the show, right?)
Without further ado, here they are:
Brian: Age 27. He's a single telecommunication manager originally from Elk Grove, CA and now lives in San Francisco, CA. He's an Air Force veteran and the CBS website states that he's a "guy's guy." Whatever could they mean?
Angie: Age 29. She's a single pharmaceutical sales representative hailing from Virginia Beach, VA and now resides in Orlando, FL. The CBS site touts her as a "smart and sexy Korean-American tomboy." She's recently divorced. She prides herself for being the Guinness-chugging champion for women at a bar event. Oh, she wants to be with a guy's guy ... will there be a showmance?
Memphis: Age 25. He's originally from Collierville, TN and now lives in Los Angeles, CA. Now, here's a typical reality television kind of guy -- he claims to be a "mixologist." He says it's not a bartender, but that's exactly what it is. He's single, but has lived with his girlfriend for over three years.
April: Age 30. She's a single financial manager originally from Arlington, NE and now resides in Higley, AZ. Uh-oh. She claims to be obsessive compulsive. That will go over well, huh? Her favorite movie is Dumb and Dumber. So much for intellect.
Ollie: Age 27. He's a single marketing sales representative originally from Des Moines, IA and now lives in Minneapolis, MN. He doesn't drink, smoke, or curse. (Does he know what he's getting into on the show?) He grew up in a strict Pentecostal family and refers to them as "the black Brady Bunch." He's definitely not a Will Mega (BB1) type, is he?
Michelle: She's 28, a single realtor, and hails from Cumberland, RI. The CBS website says she's "an East Coast firecracker." Um, okay. She actually spoke up and didn't hold her peace at her brother's wedding. I can see her having some issues in the house.
Jerry: He's 75, a married great-grandfather, and a retired marketing executive originally from Wiles Barre, PA now in Magnolia, TX. He should be interesting -- he's in great shape and has never missed an episode of the show in all nine previous seasons. He's also been a fan of the live feeds. I think I want him for the win already, but time will tell.
Libra: Age 31, a married human resources representative from Spring, TX. She has three children and recently gave birth to what the CBS site says is a medical rarity -- twins, one black and one white. She's a staunch Obama supporter and says Oprah Winfrey is her hero. She likes to shop and gossip and is attracted to men like Nick from BB8.
Steven: Age 35, he's a gay rodeo competitor now living in Dallas, TX but originally hailing from Opelousas, LA. He's a champion bull rider, but will he be able to ride the bull that goes on in the Big Brother house? He thinks everyone who meets him likes him. We'll see about that.
Renny: Age 53, she's a married beauty salon owner from New Orleans, LA. She's a proud New Orleans socialite, loves to party, and hangs out in the French Quarter. I don't think she's one of the flashing women on the balconies. She's been married for 27 years and has two grown children. Hopefully she's no Sheila (BB9).
Dan: Age 24, he's a single Catholic school teacher from Dearborn, MI. He's very conservative and doesn't like liberals. (No, no! Don't make this a political season, please!) According to the CBS website, he considers vegans to be "weird tree-huggers" and that "tattoos are trashy and piercings are for freaks." Enough said.
Keesha: Age 29, she's a single waitress originally from Sterling, OH now living in Burbank, CA. The website calls her a "blond bombshell" and, for me, a quick glance reminds me of Daniele Donato with a bit more meat on her bones. She works at Hooters. (Didn't Daniele work at Hooters for a while, too?) I predict shallow.
Jessie: Age 22, he's a single professional bodybuilder originally from Rudd, IA now residing in Huntington Beach, CA. The information at the CBS website has him coming across as the squeaky clean all American boy next door. Let's see if Big Brother can taint him!

Meet the Big Brother 10 Cast
The claustrophobic CBS reality show is sealing 13 actual strangers — no ex lovers, secret twin partners or long-lost siblings this time — inside a makeshift house on a Studio City soundstage for the chance to be the last houseguest standing and take home the $500,000 grand prize.
“There’s somebody for everyone in this cast,” executive producer Allison Grodner recently told The Associated Press at CBS Radford Studios. “It’s going to be interesting to see people that come from such opposite worlds living together, which has always been a part of this show, but this season, we really do have our most diverse group ever.”
The contestants — which will include a gay bull rider, a Hooters waitress, a professional bodybuilder and a 75-year-old former Marine — will spend the summer competing in challenges and evicting each other while being monitored by over 50 cameras. It’s the first time since the show’s third season that the houseguests are all strangers.
“When approaching this season, we wanted to look at what made this spark and last for 10 seasons,” said Grodner, who’s worked on “Big Brother” since the second season. “Every season had its unique twist. I think, in a way, going back to basics and having the cast be all strangers is part of the twist of ‘10.’ Of course, there will be more.”
In last season’s first-ever winter edition of “Big Brother,” which was quickly put into production because of the writers strike, contestants were partnered with each other and evicted as pairs for the first four weeks of competition. Grodner said a new “Big Brother 10″ gameplay twist would be introduced during the premiere episode on July 13.
“It’s really a power-play,” teased Grodner. “The game will actually start before they enter the house.”
In recent seasons, contestants have come under fire outside the house for controversial remarks made inside the house. During the eighth season, Amber Siyavus said that Jewish people tend to be “really money-hungry” and “selfish.” Last season’s winner Adam Jasinski was fired by a nonprofit autism organization because he used the word “retards.”
“Those types of comments are not something we want to happen,” said Grodner. “It’s a live show. It’s not censored on the Internet. These are real people. We aren’t telling them what to say, but we’re not telling them what not to say either. Things do happen. We, of course, can choose what we put in the show, and we do so carefully.”
This season’s contestants seem to be more aware of the repercussions of their actions from the outset. Before meeting their competitors or entering the house, the “Big Brother 10″ cast was individually interviewed by the AP while they were voluntarily sequestered — no television, newspapers or telephones — from the outside world in a Studio City hotel.
“If you make a mistake and say the wrong things, you may offend people and be known for that forever,” said Steven Daigle, a 35-year-old geographic consultant and gay rodeo competitor from Dallas. “People make mistakes. If I do make a mistake, I hope I can learn from it and know that was some part of my life that I was ignorant or uneducated about.”
The rooms inside the “Big Brother” house this season will be themed to different decades. The kitchen, for example, resembles a ’50s diner while one of the bedrooms is filled with ’70s-inspired furnishings. The timeliness extends to this season’s crop of contestants. At 75, Jerry MacDonald will be the oldest “Big Brother” houseguest ever.
“Age does not bother me,” MacDonald told the AP. “I hope it doesn’t bother them.”
Libra Thompson, a married 31-year-old human resources representative from Spring, Texas, left behind her husband and three children — including 4-month-old twins — to participate in “Big Brother 10.” During production, Thompson and the other “Big Brother” contestants are prohibited from communicating with the outside world.
“It’s better for me that they’re younger,” said Thompson of her newborns. “At four months old, they’re not going to remember much. It’s probably going to be a little bit more difficult for my 4-year-old. However, I’m going to stay focused and remember the reason I’m here, and that’s the cash. That will help me.”
Prize money talks.
“I’m motivated because I’m a big fan of the show, but I’m more motivated that I have a chance to win $500,000,” said Angie Swindell, a 29-year-old pharmaceutical sales representative from Orlando, Fla. “I just have to keep telling myself that if I start feeling all queasy about the 24-7 thing, there’s an end to the means.”
April Dowling, a 30-year-old car dealership finance manager from Higley, Ariz., said she doesn’t think the “Big Brother” experience will be any more difficult than the time she had to spend 15 days in a “tent city” jail for drunk-driving charges. She also believes living in the house may remedy some of her obsessive-compulsive behaviors.
“I have seen a therapist,” said Dowling. “They tried to put me on anti-anxiety medication, but I’m not big on prescription medication. I just don’t like to take it. I’m actually hoping the ‘Big Brother’ experience will be therapeutic. My life will not end if the green beans aren’t behind the corn in the pantry.”

Yes folks, it's finally over. Bachelorette DeAnna Pappas has finally made up her mind, choosing long-haired professional snowboarder Jesse Csincsak, 26, over account executive and single father Jason Mesnik, 31, on The Bachelorette season finale.
Yes, the show we have been enduring every Monday for two whole hours a pop finally ended when Pappas accepted a proposal from the gnarly dude.
"I'm about to go meet my future in-laws," Jesse said. "And as rad as that is, my heart is pounding through my chest.
"Jesse is not a guy DeAnna has normally dated," DeAnna's father told cameras after he first met Jesse.
Both Jason and Jesse met DeAnna's family and while Jason blew them away with chivalry, Jesse's sweaty palms and deer-in-headlights demeanor didn't earn him points with them. When DeAnna's family voiced their favoring of Jason over Jesse, DeAnna was visibly upset. However, another family meeting was arranged with both contenders at once, and Jesse was finally able to win over DeAnna's father by asking for his blessing to propose.
in a twist, jilted Bachelor Jeremy came back to talk to DeAnna. Jeremy, a classic over-achiever who didn't like to lose, told her she was making a mistake. She cried, then rejected him all over again (ouch-a-rama). After he left her hotel room, Jeremy dropped to his knees and started crying while us good folks at home laughed.
Later, when DeAnna rejected Jason, she said: "I would be the luckiest person in the world to be with you. I just can't because my heart is somewhere else."
In the limo of shame, a shell-shocked Jason said, "I'm completely shocked. I feel like I'm a good enough guy who cares about people. I was so ready to be in love again. I was SO ready."

The Bachelorette Finale with Deanna Pappas… and the winner is Jesse Csincsak.
What a shock! Most of us thought Jason Mesnick would win!
The Bachelorette begins with both men, Jesse and Jason saying they are in love with Deanna. Both say they are ready to propose to Deanna tonight.
Jason starts the show saying he feels he has met his “soulmate” in Deanna. He reminisces about how he didn’t expect to fall in love again. After his marriage ended, which he thought would last forever, he didn’t think he’d be lucky enough to fall in love again. The show looks back on Jason’s mother advising him to open up and that love is worth the chance you could get hurt.
Jesse talks of building a strong friendship leading to a relationship. Even though Deanna first didn’t feel attracted to Jesse, she felt a connection growing stronger each time she was with him. Jesse said he is definitely falling in love with Deanna.
The bachelorette, Deanna Pappas, takes Jesse and Jason home to meet her family in Georgia. Deanna speaks about how important it is for her family’s approval of the guy she chooses. Deanna tells her family about Jason and his 3 year-ol-son Ty. And also tells them about Jessie being a snowboarder, and that they probably wouldn’t think he was her type.
Jason arrives to her house first, bringing flowers to Deanna and to the family. Jason meets Greg Pappas, Deanna’s dad, and he lets Jason know he will be grilling Jason to death. Jason tells the family that his wife left him, which is what ended his marriage -and about his 3 year-old-son, Ty. Deanna’s dad expresses concern that Deanna will be moving into an instant family with Jason.
Jason has a private and serious talk with Deanna’s dad. Jason tells Greg, Deanna’s father, that he is in love with his daughter. Jason then asks the father if he can have his permission to propose to Deanna. Deanna’s father tells Jason that Deanna finds him special and that he has his blessing if Deanna chooses him. Greg, Pappas thinks Jason would fit in really well with their family and would be a great pick for his family. Jason leaves and her family tells how much they like him. Deanna says the visit solidified her feeling about Jason.
Now it’s Jesse’s turn to meet the family and he is extremely nervous. Greg, Deanna’s dad says Jason will be hard to beat. And doesn’t seem to think Jesse looks like his daughter’s type. The dad, Greg Pappas wants to know what Jesse will do one day when he is older, and no longer can snowboard. Deanna’s sister asks if Deanna could see herself marrying Jesse and having children with him. Jesse leaves and the family talks about how different the guys are in personality. Greg Pappas tells Deanna that Jason is definitely in love with Deanna, and that Jessie said the same thing but felt it was more “heartfelt” from Jason than it is from Jesse. It is quite obvious that Greg, Deanna’s father, thinks Jason is the best choice for Deanna, even though he knows it is ultimately her decision.
Deanna’s family still feels the hurt Deanna Pappas endured when on The Bachelor, when Brad Womack broke her heart. They want to ensure this doesn’t happen to Deanna again.
Now it’s the second day in Georgia, and Jason, 31, and Jesse, 26, are going to meet Deanna’s extended family. Jesse shows up first to meet her big family. Deanna worries about Jesse being so nervous. Deanna’s dad lets Jesse know they are absolutely going to “grill” him today, jokingly. The doorbell rings and it’s Jason. Deanna says that the guys have no idea they are meeting the family together today. Both men find it a very awkward situation.
Deanna takes her seat on the couch right in the middle of Jessie and Jason. Deanna was obviously very uneasy. Jason says how gut-wrenching it is to see Deanna has feelings for Jessie. Jessie jokes around and teaches the grandparents some cool new handshakes. Jason talks more seriously and tells the grandparents how Deanna is “everything” to him. The grandmother says that after talking to Jason she feels he is the “one”. The grandfather says it is up to Deanna though to make the decision.
Meanwhile Jesse tells the sister and the sister-in-law that he has cried over his feelings for Deanna. Jesse says he hasn’t felt so strongly for someone so quickly. Jessie wants to pull the father aside for a second chance, and asks for Deanna’s dad’s blessing. Greg wants to know if Jesse is ready for all “this”. Jesse gets tearful as he asks for Deanna’s dad’s “stamp of approval”. Greg says he does give Jessie his blessing, but told Jessie to keep his hair short if he is with his daughter and laughs. Jesse and Deanna’s dad, Greg, hug.
Deanna’s family turns the get together into a real party, even doing shots. It’s time for the guys to say goodbye, and both guys wonder what impression they made on the family. Jesse tricked Jason into saying goodbye to Deanna first so he could have a few more moments with Deanna.
After the guys leave, Deanna asks her sister and sister-in-law who she should choose. Chrissy, Deanna’s sister seems to think Jason is more serious and a better choice. Crystal, the sister-in-law, thinks Deanna is a free spirit and that Jessie would be a better choice at this stage in her life. Deanna seems even more confused now about which guy she should choose.
Jeremy, 30, from Dallas that was rejected at the last rose ceremony, and wants to talk to Deanna one final time. Jeremy spills his heart about his feelings for her and Deanna tearfully tells Jeremy that she is not in love with him. She wanted him to know and not to drag it out and hurt him more. Jeremy leaves completely pitiful and heart-broken.
The Bachelorette continues as they travel to The Bahamas. Deanna goes on a date with Jessie, and they fly to a secluded island. Jesse says he has a little gift for Deanna. It’s a little scrapbook with photos of he and Deanna together and things he wrote about his feelings for her. Jesse tells Deanna he loves her, but she holds back.
Now it’s Jason’s turn and the couple are going to go scuba diving with sharks. They have lots of fun. Jason gives Deanna a board game he made for her. Jason tells Deanna he loves her and doesn’t have a doubt in his mind. Deanna said she just melted, and he makes her feel like no one else does.
The morning of the rose ceremony Deanna thinks about both Jason and Jesse. With Jason she feels safe, but with Jesse she has lots of fun. It’s time for the rose ceremony and Deanna Pappas is 100% sure of her decision. She hopes to be engaged today.
The white limousine pulls up with Jason walking towards Deanna. Jason gets down on one knee and Deanna says, “I can’t”. Deanna says even though she is falling in love with him, she is in love with someone else. Both Jason and Deanna cry, and she escorts him to his car. Jason is shocked and devastated as he leaves the rose ceremony. What the hell? We wanted Jason to win!!
Now the white limousine pulls up with Jesse inside. Deanna says she can see Jesse Csincsak by her side. Deanna says she thinks she will have a great future with Jesse. Deanna says she has found her “soulmate” in Jesse, and the man of her dreams. Jesse gets down on one knee and asks Deanna to marry him and she said “yes.” She then gives the final rose to Jesse Csincsak.
Congrats to Deanna Pappas and Jesse Csincsak. Although many of us were rooting for Jason.
Pappas said televised nuptials could also be in her own future. “We haven’t put a lot of thought into it, but we both know we have a lot of fans behind us. There’s a lot of people that have followed me since my season with Brad, and I know that there’s a lot of followers and supporters that would like to see that happy ending,” she told reporters. “I can’t say I put a lot of thought into it, but I’m not really opposed to letting those fans into that part of my life.”
While the wedding isn’t even its planning stage, Pappas had one word to describe it: big. “It’s going to be big. I have a huge family, there’s no way I could cut down my list. We’ve already thought about it, and it’s just ridiculous,” she told reporters. “It’s going to be a big wedding and I’m kind of a traditional kind of girl. I want lots of white.”
In addition, Pappas told reporters she wants her wedding dress to be “simple.” “I want him to still look at me that day and know that he’s still marrying me — not some dolled up girl in this big fru-fru dress,” she said.
Deanna Pappas has a memento from the show. “I still have the piece of paper where I was doing my pros and cons because it was never an easy decision,” she said. “It was always a very, very hard decision for me.”

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na Movie Review
Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na Movie Review by Taran Adarsh
Two decades ago, the Mansoor Khan-helmed QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK, starring two newcomers [Aamir Khan, Juhi Chawla], focused on teenage love, with parental opposition acting as an obstacle. The story wasn’t new, but the treatment was fresh and inventive. QSQT remains one of the finest reference films in this genre and rightly so!
JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a love story as well, but it’s more of an Archie-Jughead-Veronica-Betty kind of a plot, set in the current milieu. We witnessed a gist of it a few years ago in the Shahid Kapur launch pad ISHQ VISHK.
JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA doesn’t dare to be different. Basically a simple tale about a group of friends, it focuses on one couple that’s in love, but is in a state of denial. Haven’t we watched similar love stories in the past, you may ask. Sure, we have, but the execution of the subject makes all the difference.
Large portions of JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA have been executed well by debutante director Abbas Tyrewala, but the problem lies in the second hour when the film gets lengthy and also, a few tracks throw a spanner in the otherwise smooth proceedings. Even the climax, although well shot, is passé [very filmy in an otherwise real film], since a number of films have had similar endings.
Yet, despite the shortcomings, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA works for a number of solid reasons and that’s what the viewer carries home. A decent fare that takes you back to your adolescence, when friends seem to be the be-all and end-all.
Jai [Imran Khan] and Aditi [Genelia] are buddies. In fact, they hang out with their group of friends, but have eyes for each other only. Their friends know that Jai and Aditi are perfect for each other. Their parents know this as well. Everybody knows this. But the couple doesn’t. So when do they realize its love?
Don’t expect fireworks or melodrama in this prem kahani. It’s an extremely simple, uncomplicated tale that never goes over the top. The bonding amongst friends is well established. So is the relationship that Ratna Pathak Shah shares with her deceased husband’s portrait [reminds you of Ashok Saraf-Priya Tendulkar relationship in the popular comedy show HUM PAANCH].
Besides, the two [popular] songs that come in the initial reels — ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ and ‘Pappu Can’t Dance’ — only spice up the proceedings. The arrival of the ‘third angle’ in this love story [Manjari Phadnis] is perfect. Everything is faultless in the first hour.
But the second hour lets you down. The Ayaz-Genelia relationship is, again, well developed, but the second hour gets a tad lengthy. But what looks completely out of place in this light and breezy entertainer is the Rajput connection and how it saves the lead man from the cop [Paresh Rawal]. This track irritates!
Also, the climax, set in an airport, is beaten to death. There’s no novelty in it, since we’ve seen the same ending in film after film.
Abbas Tyrewala has the makings of a fine director. A.R. Rahman’s music is already a rage and the two songs at the start are superb compositions. Cinematography is excellent.
Every member of the cast stands out, but the film belongs to Imran and Genelia. Imran has been presented as the boy-next-door and that works in his favor. He has screen presence and acts very well for a first timer. Most importantly, he looks the part. Genelia adds freshness to her scenes. What makes you take to Genelia is her spontaneity. Also, the mischievous look in her eyes conveys sorrow with equal ease. Wish to see more of her in Hindi movies! Manjari is a complete natural. She is very effective.
The group of friends — Karan [as Rotlu], Alishka [as Bombs], Nirav [as Jiggy] and Sughanda [as Shaleen] — are excellent. Each compliments the other well. Ratna Pathak Shah is highly competent. Jayant Kripalani and Anuradha Patel [as Genelia’s parents] are sweet. Pratiek Babbar [as Genelia’s brother] springs a pleasant surprise. He is flawless in an unconventional role. Ayaz Khan [as Genelia’s fiancé] registers a strong impact. A good actor!
Rajat Kapoor and Kitu Gidwani [as Manjari’s parents] are fair. Naseeruddin Shah is in terrific form. Paresh Rawal, again, is wonderful. Arbaaz Khan and Sohail Khan irritate, mainly because the roles don’t work.
On the whole, JAANE TU… YA JAANE NA is a breezy entertainer which will be loved by its target audience — the youth. At the box-office, business at multiplexes should ensure a speedy recovery for this moderate budget film. A profitable venture!

Love Story 2050 Movie Review
Wish Harry Baweja had kept it simple. By the look of the film's first half, it seems a love story set in 2008 would have worked better as son Harman's debut venture instead of "Love Story 2050", which really is neither here nor there.
Yes, the movie moves across places and time, but unfortunately, it belongs nowhere, and goes nowhere. In fact, it just loses its way in a mess created by a bad script and worse story-telling.
It's neither a full blown romantic film nor a science fiction. Kindly put, "Love Story 2050" is a misdirected attempt, albeit an ambitious one, to launch Harman Baweja in a film that has been made with a simple intention - to stand apart from the rest. It does stand apart, but not for its originality or technical brilliance, but the immense disappointment it leaves you with. What a waste of a Rs500 million budget!
No, the hype does not kill it. In fact, one steps into the first day's first show with no expectations, instead probably with a little sympathy for the film and its debutant hero as the giant Aamir Khan and his cutthroat marketing of "Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na" had been threatening to crush Harman's dream, even before he could prove himself.
A handful of people in the cinema were the first ominous sign of things to come. As Karan (Harman) makes a stylised entry on the big screen, you wait for the next big things to happen. But what does is pretty regular stuff... Love at first sight, Karan subsequently wooing Sana (Priyanka Chopra), the couple singing some melodious songs, while the eye-pleasing locales of South Australia roll in the background.
To be fair, till this point, the film, though moving at a slower-than-desired pace, manages to keep you interested.
But just when you think the lonely Karan is alone no more, it's time to go into the future. The Shanghai-lookalike Mumbai of 2050 is where he lands along with scientist Uncle Ya (Boman Irani) and Sana's siblings. Our happy hero of the first half is now on a mission, which progresses in a painfully confused manner.
Instead of the much talked about technical wizardry bowling one over, what knocks our senses dead is a haphazard bunch of sequences that don't connect cohesively and challenge logic every step of the way.
By now you genuinely feel sorry for Harman and even have no patience or appreciation for the special effects that inconsistently appear on screen. Some are amateurish, some impressive, but you simply don't care.
At almost 3 hours, this love story makes you weep for a happy ending, or just any ending.
Amidst all that's mediocre and bad, Harman makes his presence felt. For most of film he is at ease and dances like a dream, and except for a few scenes that require complex emoting, his acting passes muster. And yes, not just the face, even his voice and on screen mannerisms are quite like Hrithik Roshan's. So whether he likes it or not, comparisons will remain and it will take a lot of effort from him to come into his own.
Priyanka's performance fluctuates between likable and contrived, and despite the long length of her role, she doesn't really make a mark. Her stylist though does a good job of making her fit her two on screen personas.
The remaining cast has bit roles with nothing to do, and even the immensely talented Boman Irani fails to win you over.
The fault lies mainly with the script, screenplay and direction. Together, the three make you so weary that while you do notice that the music is pleasing and the sets beautifully crafted, you can't be bothered with applauding.
‘I don't need luck because I have love', is Karan's favourite line in the film. Well, Harman may have love, but for "Love Story 2050" to work, he'll only need luck. And lots of it.

A prankster who opened an account on a popular networking site under the name of Safeena Kapoor Khan, has been giving Bollywood’s ‘it’ couple several harrowing moments.
Strangely, not only is he leaking out very private info related to the couple, but he’s also managed to update his site with candid photographs of Saif and Kareena that were apparently taken for their personal albums. Every move of the couple in love, which neither
Saif nor Kareena would dream of sharing with anyone but family and close friends, is posted on Safeena.
A source close to Kareena said, “It was getting freaky. For instance if Saif was in London, the updated post would say, ‘Now I am in London and Kareena will join me any time. I cannot wait to be with her.’ Similarly, every account of their interaction was up for fans to see. Friends who got little worried, then called them up.”
Kareena, who’s in Los Angeles to shoot for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambahkt Ishq with Hollywood biggie Slyvester Stallone, said, “A couple of friends informed me about this person on the networking site. For the record, I don’t have any account there and neither does Saif. So don’t take this seriously.” It is not known if the couple will seek the help of the Mumbai Police’s Cyber Cell to deal with this crime.
